In our Shodasa samskarams ‘education’ is not merely for livelihood. It imbibes the values of life. It is not just a token exercise of practicing letters. It is a ritual. The letters have originated from the sound of the ‘Damarukam’ (a percussion) of Nataraja. According to the Hindu scriptures, the letters were described as the power-packed celestial forms. Each alphabet is a great mantra. The objective of this exclusive rite is to enable the infant to get the blessings of the divinities, make it knowledgeful and enjoy bright future. The celestials namely Vasini etc who presented us ‘Sri Lalita Sahasra namams’ are none other than the embodiments of the letters (alphabets)!

Goddess Saraswathi represents Education. She is worshipped to bestow her grace on the infant during the Aksharabhyasam. Vedas clearly prescribed with what letters the ‘Aksharabhyasam’ must begin. Initially, the child was helped to write five-lettered Panchakshari mantram “Om Namaha sivaya siddham namaha”. By doing so, Lord Iswara who was the embodiment of all celestials, personification of knowledge, originator of alphabets from the sound produced by his Damarukam (percussion) and Dakshinamurty who was the cause of the script would shower His grace over the child.
