‘Annaprasana’ is one of the Shodasa samskaras (purificatory rites) exclusively for Hindus.This is an important celebration in which solid food is given to the infant for the first time to enable it to grow physically. Susruta who was a celestial physician prescribes solid food instead of mother’s milk to the infant in the sixth month. A selective food is prepared amid vedic chants to empower the infant to attain different qualities.

For this purpose the timing of the ceremony will be fixed based on the strength of the star according to the horoscope of the infant. This rite gives the infant longevity, health and effulgence to the infant. The timing reflects on various health aspects of the infant throughout life. So effective timing is essential. The ceremony is performed in the months bearing prime numbers such as 6,8,10,12. In the case of the female infants it is better to perform this rite in the months bearing odd number such as 5,7,9,11.

According to the Kalamrita volume, the native will be afflicted with leprosy if there is sun in the ascendant in the annaprasana timing, poor if there is debilitated moon, food donor if there is full moon, bilial if there is mars, great scholar if there is mercury. Luxurious if there is Jupiter, enjoys long life if there is venus, gastric patient if there is Saturn and very poor if rahyu and ketu are in the ascendants. So it is all the more important to fix the annaprasana muhurtam taking care that there is no relation with any sinful planet.The parents must consult expert astrologers to get the timing fixed on the basis of the native’s horoscope for the auspiciousness and fame of the infant in the lifetime.
