Who is originally Brihaspati, nicely explains about this rite in hus ‘Viramitrodaya Samskara Prakasika’ volume . Suppose no name is there to individuals, “How the second man addresses the first man or vice versa?. Therefore name plays an important role in human life. It would be excellent if the so called name is in conformity with the native’s horoscope conferring auspiciousness, fortune, and enhances longevity and fame.
That being the case, can we remain unthankful to those who handed down to us such an exemplary naming rite.
Long ago Gurus and dynastic priests used to fix a suitable name based on the characteristics of the infant. Due to floodlike changes in the world scenario, time constraints in the modern society, the practice of naming the infant depending on the tastes and ideas of parents or other elders, the mode of naming also underwent considerable transformation.

An authoritative book namely ‘Paraskara Gruhya sutram’ covered many details on the type of the name to be put to the male and female infants.

Naming ceremony is a rite to be performed for the bliss, longevity, charm and fame of the infant. Naming function is originally termed as ‘Balasare’ but became widely popular as ‘barasala’. The function is traditionally performed on the eleventh day of the infant. The mother will be given the first bath after delivery. Punyahavachanam and purificatory rites will also be performed. The naming function can be organized on the same day. If this can not be done, Punyahavachanam (invocation of piety) and waist string must be tied on that day compulsorily. Barasala can be performed on a odd number day later. If on the 16th or 21st day no other consultation of timing (muhurat) such as tithi, day of the week and time are required. If naming can not be solemnized within a month, it can be undertaken in the third month of the infant.
