New York January 26^th, 2014: THE UNSEEN SEQUENCE: Exploring Bharatanatyam through the art of MalavikaSarukkai, directed by SumantraGhoshal will have its international screening on the opening day of the DANCE ON CAMERA FESTIVAL. It’s an important step in the right direction to get Bharatanatayam seen in mainstream theaters as an art form with relevance. “The film is engaging as it has multiple narratives.

It traces my personal journey of discovery in dance seen against the passage of Bharatanatyam from temple to court to proscenium stage,” says MalavikaSarukkai. Exclusively filmed performances, historical re-creations and in-depth interviews explore not just the history of the dance but also the connections and departures that Malavika makes from a hallowed and, often, unforgiving tradition. Thus, through the art of MalavikaSarukkai, we see how Bharatanatyam is being re-interpreted, renewed, invigorated.
