Onam Celebrations at Vijayawada
Vijayawada, September 23, 2013: The bustling premises of VIMS Mother Theresa College of Nursing exuded an air of festivity on Sunday.
A good number of Malayalee families descended on the college for celebrating Onam, an important festival of Kerala that marks commemoration of Vamana Avatara of Vishnu and the subsequent homecoming of mythical king Mahabali. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala’s agrarian past, as it is considered to be a harvest festival.
Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu inaugurated the celebrations by lighting the traditional jyothi. The MLA also felicitated D. Anusuya Devi, the topper of VIMS College of Medical Lab Technology, Vijayawada.
He said discipline and focus on academic were essential in student life to achieve success. He later gave prizes to winners of various events organised on the occasion.
T. Arjun Rao, Chairman of Vijaya Institute of Medical Sciences, brought to the fore the significance of the 10-day festival. S.B. Nambiar, R. Tulasidharan and K. R. Madhu Kumar, presidents of Malayalee Association, Vijayawada, Kerala Club, Vijayawada and Kairali Association, Vijayawada, respectivelyand many others graced the occasion.
