Coimbatore, September 14, 2013: Seven processions for immersion of 208 Vinayaka idols installed as part of Vinayaka Chathurti celebrations passed off peacefully in Coimbatore City on Friday.
According to police, of the 338 Vinayaka idols immersed by the public and various Hindu outfits, as many as 208 were immersed in the last phase on Friday.
Since Tuesday, immersions had been taking place across the city and the major one was completed on Friday.
All the idols were immersed at Muthannakulam near Thadagam Road and Gandhi Park in the city.
As seven processions wound their way from various places one after the other, the police were on their toes in providing bandobast to ensure peace.
Despite planned traffic diversion, there were some minor bottle necks in vehicle flow from West Coimbatore to East and vice versa.
However, the police, by resorting to ad hoc arrangements based on the location of the processions, managed to ease traffic congestion.
In Coimbatore Rural district, two idols were immersed at Pollachi taluk and there are 64 more idols to be immersed.
