Ganesh Visarjan at Madurai
Madurai, September 12, 2013: procession, organised by the Hindu Munnani, and immersed in the Vaigai here on Wednesday evening.
Before the procession began at 6.15 p.m., the idols were lined up in East Masi Street where a meeting was conducted. Representatives of various Hindu organisations, including State vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party H. Raja, participated in the meeting and addressed the gathering.
A volunteer said 135 idols — 50 from Jaihindpuram and the rest from Karimedu, Anna Nagar and Sellur among other places — were brought for the procession. The colourful idols, some of which were more than five feet tall, were taken in a procession around the Masi streets on tricycles and mini-vans.
Traffic was diverted from 3.30 p.m. Dressed in saffron, members of various Hindu organisations led the procession by dancing to the drum beat.
A large number of police personnel were present to ensure peaceful conduct of the event. All the vehicles carrying the idols were checked by the bomb disposal squad.
