Ganesh Visarjan at Madurai
Madurai, September 11, 2013: A total of 25 idols of Lord Vinayaka were taken out in a procession in the city before they were immersed in a pool of water in the Vaigai riverbed on Tuesday.
Idols of different sizes, taken around the Masi Streets from Mottai Vinayagar Temple, were installed by the Hindu Makkal Katchi (Tamilagam), Hindu Eluchi Iyakkam and Akila Bharata Hindu Maha Sabha.
Volunteers of the organisations, who took the idols on tricycles and cargo autorickshaws on a procession, danced their way all along to drum beats and songs played on public address systems.
Some of them had applied powders of different colours on themselves during the Vinayaka Chathurthi celabrations. Amidst tight security provided by a large posse of police, the procession reached the Sellur causeway via Thaikkal.
A pool of water stagnating in a trench dug up along the causeway enabled the volunteers to immerse the idols in the otherwise dry Vaigai riverbed.
