Madurai, August 27, 2013: To mark the occasion of ‘Krishna Jayanthi’ on Wednesday, the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Corporation Limited has organised an exhibition titled ‘Krishna Darshan’ at Poompuhar Showroom in West Veli Street here.

Idols of Lord Krishna made of paper mache, clay, white wood, marble, oxidised aluminium and sandalwood handcrafted by artisans from places in and around Madurai, Tiruchi and Thanjavur are on display and are up for sale.

“The paper mache dolls are very popular with our customers.

They do not break easily and come in various sizes,” said the showroom manager N Xavier.

There is also an array of bronze idols kept on display. “The bronze idols here have been crafted at our production centre in Swamimalai and are bought by visitors to be kept in their puja rooms. These idols are priced higher than the ones made of paper mache but are admired for the intricate craftsmanship” said Mr. Xavier, who also added that there would be similar exhibitions to mark other auspicious festivals.

“An exhibition of idols of Lord Ganesha will begin soon after the Krishna Darshan to mark Vinayaka Chathurthi,” he said.

Apart from different idols on display, there is also a range of paintings for sale.

They include paintings on silk as well as batik work paintings done on fabric.

The idols and paintings on display are priced anywhere between Rs.100 to Rs.7,000.
