Amma Mandapam ghat closed – People offered their rituals for their ancestors on the road
Tiruchi, August 7, 2013: With the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat kept out of bounds from the public in the wake of rising level of water in the Cauvery, several people performed rituals for their ancestors along the Amma Mandapam Road on the occasion of ‘Aadi Amavasai’ on Tuesday.
Usually, public perform the rituals on the Amma Mandapam bathing ghat after taking a dip in the Cauvery. The huge quantum of discharge from the Mettur dam made it unsafe for people to venture into the Cauvery.
The district administration had ordered the closure of Amma Mandapam ghat as a precautionary measure to prevent drowning. Despite the closure of the ghat where the police personnel and fire fighters were deployed, the Amma Mandapam Road was teeming with people who performed the rituals along the stretch.
Bus services on the Amma Mandapam Road were suspended and barricades erected in front of the Garuda Mandapam bathing ghat to prevent public from coming anywhere close to the river.
