Madurai, August 5, 2013: It is once again time for festivities in the city as Avanimoola festival commenced in Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Sunday. The stage is set for enactment of ‘Thiruvilayadal’ at different places of religious and historical importance in Madurai.

At 10.30 a.m. on Sunday, the temple priests hoisted the celestial flag (kodiyetram in Tamil) to mark the commencement of 18-day festival amidst chanting of hymns. The Avanimoola festival features divine sports. An important highlight is the coronation of Lord Sundareswarar on August 16.

“This is a very important festival for the temple and public will enjoy the celebrations. Idols will be taken out in procession around the temple and there will be attractive events at the Vaigai too,” said P.Jayaraman, Joint Commisioner (HR and CE), Meenakshi Temple.
