6000-Year-Old Stone Structure Unearthed at Andipatti

Palani, July 20, 2013: A stone structure that helps people track the movement of the sun throughout the year and calculate ‘Utharayana’ and ‘Dhakshinayana kaalams’ was found near Andipatti village on the Western Ghats near here.

Led by archaeologist S.Narayanamurthy, a team assessed that it was a 6,000-year-old one. A giant-size flat granite stone slab was mounted on two granite balls in an open field, where there was no human movement. The purpose was to observe the path of the sun in a year.

The path will change on Aadi 1 and Thai 1. People in Israel, Italy and England too had been following a method similar to it in the earlier days, he added.
