HMK Forbidden from Staging Protest against Alleged Temple Desecration
Coimbatore, July 14, 2013: The Hindu Makkal Katchi Vivekanandar Makkal Iyakkam has condemned the police refusal to grant permission to the organisation to stage a protest on Sunday against the alleged desecration of a temple near Sulur in the district.
In a statement issued here, V. Sakthivel, West Zone Secretary of the organisation, said that a Suyambu Kaliamman Temple was located along the banks of Noyyal and pujas were performed in the temple for over seven years by a priest.
However, in the recent months, a councillor was allegedly creating trouble for the temple.
Mr. Sakthivel alleged that the councillor had desecrated the temple.
Complaint
He added that their organisation had lodged a police complaint against the councillor and had also sought police permission to stage a demonstration on Sunday at Sulur against the councillor’s act. However, the rural police had told the organisation that there was a blanket ban on giving permission for protests involving religious issues. Mr. Sakthivel said that they would still try to stage a protest.
