KANPUR, July 12, 2013: The blasts in BodhGaya dampened the festive spirit of SomvatiAmavasya. A few visitors were seen at ghats, taking a holy dip into the river. The temples witnessed low turn-out. This also brought disappointment for the shopkeepers and boatmen, who were expecting huge crowd and brisk business.

"Coming to Ghat is not at all safe now. I took a dip in Ganga as I am having fast but I left my children at home so that that they remain safe in case of any eventuality," said Shivali from Maharajpur.

Babulal and his family remained confined at the ghat. "Earlier, we use to go to other side of the river. We use to enjoy. But this year, the scenario was changed. Very less number of people were seen at ghats. The blasts and calamities have dampened the festive spirit," he said.

Meanwhile, the married womaen observed fast and prayed for the long life of spouses.

It is believed that observing fast helps devotees to get rid of sorrows and problems. Amavasya is no moon day of the Hindu lunar calendar.

Peepal tree is considered as a sacred. As per traditions and on the auspicious day of Somvati Amavasya, married women tie a sacred thread around its trunk for 108 times. Parikrama around the tree is performed for 108 times. The tree is offered milk, sandal paste, flowers and vermillion.
