Multitudes Show Up at Kamakhya Temple for Ambubachi

GUWAHATI, June 25, 2013: Thousands of pilgrims have assembled at Kamakhya temple for their annual pilgrimage during Ambubachi.

Hailing from different countries, continents and within the country, the pilgrims have stationed themselves in Guwahati for the past few weeks to soak in the festive ambience. Such is the pull of the place that many have given up the comfort of their homes for days on end to be a part of the festivities. Some are taking long leave from work.

"Since my childhood, I have been attracted to eastern mysticism and philosophy. Growing up in communist Russia was tough as religion was frowned upon and even banned. This is my second trip to Kamakhya. I have been saving money to come here. I offer astrology and other spiritual services in Moscow, which is my hometown," said Stansilav (Om Prakash), an ardent devotee.

Overseas visitors have come from as far as Italy, Russia, Switzerland, the US and Australia. Some are sharing accommodation with sadhus and vagabonds. Attired in saffron robes, it is difficult to identify them in a crowd of Hindu devotees.

"This is my third trip to Kamakhya," said Durga, a devotee from Italy, adding, "I am seeking spiritual solace. We are all the same as we are the children of mother. I am living in an ashram in Madhya Pradesh and have been looking forward to this trip."

For Gauri, an Italian devotee in her sixties, the slush around the temple did not matter. A couple of showers have messed up the temple area. On the contrary, she said, "We are all born equal. The stench and the crowd do not bother me. This is a celebration of humanity."

Even if Gauri is not bothered, the residents of the area are. They feel the Kamakhya district administration could have done much better in managing the event in terms of hygiene and sanitation.
