Pilgrims from Lucknow Stranded in Uttarakhand Pluvial

LUCKNOW: The incessant rains and the ensuing landslides and cloudburst have left a number of pilgrims from Lucknow stranded in Uttarakhand. With no information on the whereabouts of pilgrims who had gone to Himalayan shrines, their family members back home are anxious about their safety.

Unable to contact her family members who had gone to Uttarakhand on pilgrimage, Shweta Singh, a resident of Aashiana, is restless.

Singh said, "They were in Kedarnath on Sunday when we last spoke to them. Their phone has remained switched off since then." She added she had been praying to God constantly for their well being.

Similarly, the son and daughter-in-law of Annapurna Rastogi, a housewife, are stranded somewhere near Kedarnath.

"I am worried about their safety as there is no information about them for over 30 hours. The atmosphere at home is filled with anxiety and we hope they are safe and secure," said Rastogi.

Sudhir Shukla, an advocate, spoke to seven members of his family on Tuesday. They were returning from Kedarnath when the situation worsened. Shukla said he spoke to his brother for a few minutes and could not gather details. "My family members are stranded in Gauri Kund, the place from where the pilgrims start their journey to temple on foot. All the roads are blocked. Their mobile phones are discharged and there is no power supply," said Shukla.

Dr Neeti Purwar's sister and brother-in-law along with three families were mid-way to Badrinath when monsoon ravaged Uttarakhand. "They were lucky as they managed to reach Hardwar. Though they are safe, they told us that the condition is pathetic as all the roads have been damaged while the bridges have swept away," said Purwar.

Likewise, Chandra Shekhar Sati, a resident of Indiranagar, was on his way to Almora when landslide hit the area. Sati had to divert which delayed his journey by about four hours. "The condition is terrific as a number of tourists are stuck there," he said.
