Bhutan March 21, 2014: Bhutanese youth celebrate the Festival of Colors Holi in Tukwila Sunday.

Members of the Bhutanese community in Tukwila celebrated Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors, Sunday with face painting and a walk through the neighborhood.

The event was jointly sponsored by Unity Creation and Bhutanese Youth Resource Center.

About 40 youth gathered at the Cascade View Park, where they painted their faces and then walked through the neighborhood.

As they walked, they were asked questions about the celebration and others asked to have their faces painted, according to Tek Kafley, a community member.

In Nepal the Festival of Colors Holi announces the arrival of spring and the passing of winter and is marked by social merriment, he said.

“People bury their hatchets with a warm embrace and throw their worries to the wind,” he said.

Young and old are covered with colors – red, green, yellow, blue, black and silver – and they sing and dance.

Colors are exchanged and colored water is sprayed on each other. And participants throw water balloons at each other, sometimes called lola.
