At an unassuming white house next to Hornet’s Nest Elementary on Beatties Ford Road, Hindus leave their shoes on the front porch before entering what serves as their temple, called Trimurti Temple.  Soon, these worshippers will shed their shoes at a much grander structure.

In 2015, Trimurti plans to move into a 10,000-square-foot temple, on 17.5 acres next to their little white house. Construction on the temple building should begin this summer.

The first phase of the building will be a basic hall. The second phase will add the ornate exterior embellishments typical of Indian architecture. The group is striving to remain environmentally friendly during construction.

Ganesh Balasubramanian, the secretary of Trimurti, said the temple will house 17 stone idols, which are being hand-carved in India and should be completed in about six months.

The three main idols – the creator Brahma, the preserver Vishnu and the destroyer Shiva – will stand about 6 feet tall. Tri-murti means three gods, and Ganesh said it is unusual for all three gods to reside together in one temple.

Since the Trimurti group began in September 2011 , about 300 to 400 Hindus have come from as far away as Hickory and Greenville, S.C.

Ganesh said Hindus do not gather together every week or all at one time, and they sometimes drop in for only 15 minutes at a time, so the small house has accommodated their needs. But they will no doubt enjoy the space that will be afforded them at the new temple campus.
