Muhurtham

When we go to an officer for work, we usually think whether the officer is angry/jovial or friendly with us? First we try to know these things. We try to meet him only when he feels favorable towards us. We can get our work done easily. The same thing applies to Timing also. Is the time favorable for us, is it possible to fulfill our wish or desire in this period? Knowing the nature of time and planning the work in an auspicious time, there is a chance to get a favorable result without wasting time. Long ago Vidyaranya Swami decided to establish the Vijayanagar empire that could last for a long 1000 years. Harihara Raya and Bukkaraya, who were the founders of the empire, heard the conch blown by a traditional conch blower
(Jangama Devara) moments before Vidyaranya did so. The youthful royal duo thought that it was the signal given by Vidyaranya! And the foundation was laid. After that, no matter how hard they tried, they could not bring the expected result! The interval between these two sounds was just a few moments! But, an empire that was supposed to last for 1000 years was shortened to just 200 years due to the variation of timing. Had the foundation stone was laid as signaled by Vidyaranya it would have proved the strength of the timing (muhurtam) and became historic. Also, victory is not given to everyone all the time. At one point of time, what happens to one person may differ for another. Depending on the time of our birth, we should know the period that suits us. Taking a step forward by knowing the Nakshatra and Lagna times that are suitable for us/the work we set out to do according to the star (nakshatra and ascendant (lagna) at the time of our birth brings success. “Astrology” is a wonderful boon given to us by the sages to know the nature of time. Based on this, we can know on which day and at what time we can celebrate the rituals of marriage, upanayanam, housewarming, beginning of alphabets (aksharabhyasam), beginning of food (annaprasana, pujas, vratas etc. in our life.

In the process of watching the Muhurta, one has to observe the almanac (five aspects) relating to time. 1. Strength of star (tara balam, 2. strength of the moon (lunar balam) 3. strength of the ascendant (lagna balam) 4. absence of the fivesome (panchaka rahitam) 5. Twenty one great evils (ekavinsati maha doshas) Further, it must be ascertained whether the traditional name of the day (tithi), week (vaara) and star (nakshatra) are in agreement for performance of the rituals. When all these features come together, it becomes a moment. Our dharma tells
us that observing the Shuddha Muhurta, i.e. the Muhurta that is flawless, will definitely bring great results. So Hithokti gracefully accepts the responsibility of making such a fine fixation of the timing (muhurta decision) by Vedic scholars and astrologers.
